WHITEFIELD, New Hampshire - The Whitefield Public Library is on the brink of a significant transformation thanks to nearly $2 million dollars in secured funding from Congresswoman Annie Kuster, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen and the Community Development Finance Authority (CDFA).
Established in 1872 by a group of passionate individuals, Whitefield Public Library has long been dedicated to providing access to literature and knowledge for its residents. Its humble beginnings were in the home of a Whitefield resident, with an initial collection of 208 volumes. In 1904, thanks to a grant from Andrew Carnegie, the Whitefield Public Library found its home in the newly built neoclassical revival-style structure designed by architect J. Lawrence Berry.
Since then, the Whitefield Public Library has undergone only one major expansion. However, with the recent funding the library is poised for a new chapter in its history.
Director of the Whitefield Public Library, Courtney Vashaw, expressed her hopes for the renovation and expansion project, envisioning the library as the true heart of Whitefield. She emphasized the importance of creating flexible spaces capable of hosting various individuals and groups, from town meetings to community dinners and presentations. In noting the challenges and complexities involved in securing funding for the project, Courtney expressed the support received from Northern Borders.
Congresswoman Annie Kuster, who secured over $16.8 million in funding for various projects in New Hampshire's Second Congressional District, including $1 million for the Whitefield Public Library renovation project, expressed her excitement about the positive impact these resources will have on Granite State communities.
Similarly, the CDFA announced the allocation of more than $11.5 million in Community Center Investment Program resources to support community-based projects across New Hampshire. Among the recipients is the Whitefield Public Library, which will receive $911,000 to enhance its facilities and foster a culture of health and well-being in the community.
The renovation and expansion project at the Whitefield Public Library represents a significant investment in the future of the town, ensuring that the library remains a vibrant hub of learning, culture, and community engagement for generations to come. With construction set to begin in the fall, residents eagerly anticipate the transformation of their beloved library into an even more inclusive and welcoming space.
